Infrared light is a type of electromagnetic radiation with a wavelength longer than that of visible light but shorter than radio waves. There are numerous synonyms for infrared light, such as thermal radiation, heat radiation, and IR radiation. Other more technical synonyms include far infrared, near infrared, and mid-infrared radiation, depending on the wavelength and the application. In biomedical research, for example, the term "optical coherence tomography" is often used as a synonym for infrared light since it is commonly used in this imaging technique. Regardless of the field, the defining characteristic of infrared light is that it is invisible to the naked eye but can be detected by specialized instruments.
