Itapalm, also known as Ita palm, is a type of palm tree commonly found in South America. It is prized for its dense, tough wood and its oil, which is used in the production of soaps and cosmetics. Synonyms for Itapalm include Mauritia flexuosa, the scientific name for the tree, and buriti palm, which is used to refer to the tree in Brazil. It is also sometimes called aguaje in Peru, where it is used as a food source. In addition, Itapalm is sometimes confused with another palm species known as acai, which is also native to the Amazon region and has similar, but distinct characteristics.
