Jacobus Arminius was a theologian and pastor from the Netherlands who lived in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Some synonyms for his name may include James Arminius, Jacob Arminius, or simply Arminius. He is best known for his theological views that differed from those of John Calvin, a fellow theologian and founder of Calvinism. Arminius believed in prevenient grace, or the idea that God's grace is extended to all people prior to them turning to him. He also believed in free will, rejecting the idea of predestination. His views were controversial and led to the development of what is now known as Arminianism.
