The Japanese weasel, is also known as the Nihon weasel or Tsushima weasel. It is a small carnivorous mammal and a member of the Mustelidae family. Although its scientific name is Mustela itatsi, the Japanese weasel goes by different names depending on the region. For example, it is called Hondo weasel in central Japan, Shirōneko in Hokkaido, and Kamchatka weasel in the northern parts of Japan. Additional synonyms for the Japanese weasel include Asian weasel, Siberian weasel, and Korean weasel. Despite the various names, all these synonyms refer to the same species of weasels found in Japan and neighboring countries.
