Jezo spruce is a species of evergreen tree native to eastern Asia, particularly in Japan, Korea, and China. This coniferous tree has several synonyms, including Sakhalin spruce, Yezo spruce, hairy spruce, and monkey spruce. The Sakhalin spruce is so named due to its prevalence on Sakhalin Island, which is located north of Japan and south of Russia. Yezo spruce refers to the Hokkaido island of Japan, formerly known as "Ezo." Its other synonyms, hairy spruce and monkey spruce, come from the description of its foliage. Jezo spruce is a valuable timber tree used for construction, woodworking, and paper production.
