A joint family is a family structure in which multiple generations live together and share resources and responsibilities. Synonyms for joint family include extended family, multigenerational family, clan, tribe, and household. In an extended family, relatives beyond the nuclear family unit live together and function as a unit, with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins sharing living space. Multigenerational families refer to families that have ancestors at least three or four generations apart. Clans refer to families that are related by blood, lineage, or descent, and often share a common name, symbol, or totem. Finally, households are units of people who share a common living space and often share resources like food, money, and utilities.
