Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is an important historical celebration in the United States. It commemorates the end of slavery in the country, after Union soldiers brought news of the Emancipation Proclamation to Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. It has also been called Black Independence Day, Emancipation Day, or Jubilee Day. The holiday has recently gained more recognition and popularity, leading to the use of new synonyms such as Liberation Day, Emancipation Celebration, and Black Freedom Day. Whatever the name chosen, it is a day to honor the struggles and sacrifices of African Americans in the quest for equality and justice.
