The Kaw River, often referred to as the Kansas River, is a major river that flows through the state of Kansas, in the United States. This iconic river has several synonyms, including the Kaw, the Kanza, the Konza, and the Canse. The name "Kaw" was derived from the native American Kaw Nation, who lived on the banks of the river. The river originates in Junction City, Kansas, and flows for approximately 173 miles before joining the Missouri River near Kansas City. Besides its importance as a water source and transportation route, the river is also popular for recreational activities including fishing, boating, and camping.
