Kisspeptin, also known as metastin, is a naturally occurring peptide that plays a crucial role in regulating reproductive function in both males and females. Alternative names for kisspeptin include KiSS gene-derived peptide, KiSS-1 metastasis-suppressor, and Kp. The peptide is synthesized and secreted by the hypothalamus and regulates the secretion of hormones that control the menstrual cycle, ovulation, and spermatogenesis. Kisspeptin is also believed to be critically involved in the regulation of puberty and sexual behavior. Due to its importance in reproductive function, kisspeptin has been the subject of intensive research, with many synonyms used interchangeably to refer to this peptide.
