Kogia simus is the Latin name for the pygmy sperm whale, a small cetacean species found in offshore waters throughout the world's tropical and temperate oceans. There are a few synonyms for the pygmy sperm whale, including the lesser sperm whale, dwarf sperm whale, and Kogia breviceps. While similar in appearance to its larger cousin, the sperm whale, the pygmy sperm whale is significantly smaller and has a distinctively curved dorsal fin. Despite being elusive and difficult to observe in the wild, these whales play an important role in ocean ecosystems and are the subject of ongoing research and conservation efforts.
