Lafora disease, also known as Lafora progressive myoclonic epilepsy (PME), is a rare, inherited neurological disorder that affects about one in every 50,000 to 100,000 people worldwide. Synonyms for Lafora disease include Lafora body disease, Lafora epilepsy, Lafora progressive myoclonus epilepsy, and myoclonus epilepsy with Lafora bodies. It is a fatal condition that usually starts in adolescence and causes progressive neurological decline and seizures. Lafora disease is caused by mutations in genes that encode for proteins that regulate glycogen metabolism in the brain. There is no known cure for Lafora disease, but treatments may provide some relief from symptoms.
