Laicization refers to the process of allowing former members of religious orders to become secular. In essence, this means reverting to a non-clerical life. Some synonyms for laicized include defrocked, married, secularized, abandoned celibacy, laymanized and decloistered. To be defrocked is to be stripped of one's status as a priest or minister, while being "married" refers to no longer being required to remain celibate. Other synonyms are more specific to certain religions, such as being "decloistered" in Catholicism.
