Lampshells are sessile, marine invertebrates that belong to the phylum Brachiopoda. These unique creatures are also sometimes referred to as brachiopods. Some synonyms for the word "lampshell" include lamp shells, lamp-shells, lampshelled, and lamp-shell. These names are all derived from the Latin word lampas, which means light or lamp, and Greek word podos, which means foot. The lampshell's distinctive shape resembles a lampshade or shell, which is why it has also been called the lampshade shell or lampshade clam. Lampshells have two shell halves that they use to attach themselves to surfaces, and they filter-feed through a specialized hole in their body called a lophophore.
