Lao-tzu, also known as Laozi, was an ancient Chinese philosopher and writer who lived during the 6th century BCE. He is best known for his work, the Tao Te Ching, which is still widely read and studied today. In English, the name Lao-tzu is often translated as "Old Master" or "Old Sage." Other synonyms for Lao-tzu include "Lao Tse," "Lao Tsu," and "Lao Zi." The name Lao-tzu is also sometimes used to refer to the concept of Taoism, which is based on the teachings of Lao-tzu and emphasizes harmony with nature and the attainment of spiritual enlightenment.
