The left atrioventricular valve is also known as the mitral valve or bicuspid valve. This valve is situated between the left atrium and the left ventricle of the heart. It is called the bicuspid valve because it has two flaps, unlike the tricuspid valve which is found between the right atrium and right ventricle and has three flaps. The mitral valve gets its name from its resemblance to a bishop's mitre, a type of headgear worn by some religious officials. Other synonyms for the left atrioventricular valve include the left AV valve, the mitral-aortic valve, and the left heart valve.
