Liatris pycnostachya, also known as prairie blazing star, is a perennial herb native to central and eastern United States. It is a popular garden plant because of its striking purple flowers that bloom in mid-summer. Some synonyms for Liatris pycnostachya include dense blazing star, thick-spike blazing star, and button snakeroot. In addition, it is sometimes referred to as Kansas gayfeather or prairie gayfeather. The plant can grow up to 5 feet tall and attracts numerous pollinators such as bees and butterflies. It prefers full sun and well-draining soil and can be a great addition to prairie gardens or wildflower meadows.
