Lingayatism is a religion that originated in India, with a belief system based on the teachings of the 12th-century philosopher and saint, Basava. This religion is also referred to as Veerashaivism and Sharanasism. Veerashaivism is based on the principles of Bhakti (devotion) and the worship of Lord Shiva. Sharanasism, on the other hand, is focused on social reform and the promotion of equality. Other synonyms for Lingayatism are the Linga cult, Lingavantaism, and Lingadharism. While the religion is primarily practiced in the Indian states of Karnataka and Maharashtra, there are also Lingayat communities in other parts of the world, such as the United States and Europe.
