Locked-in syndrome is a condition in which a person is fully conscious and aware but unable to move or communicate except through eye movements or blinking. However, there are a few synonyms for the condition, such as pseudocoma, complete locked-in syndrome, and total locked-in syndrome. While these terms are similar to the original, they are more specific and describe the severity of the symptoms in greater detail. People with pseudocoma may appear to be comatose, but are actually fully aware of their surroundings. Those with complete locked-in syndrome have lost all voluntary muscle control, while those with total locked-in syndrome are unable to move or communicate in any way.
