Loop diuretics are commonly used medications for the treatment of edema or fluid retention in various medical conditions. Diuretics work by increasing urine output by blocking the reabsorption of certain electrolytes in the kidney. Loop diuretics are called so because they act on the loop of Henle, a segment of the kidney tubule. Some synonyms for loop diuretics are high-ceiling diuretics, which refers to the high dose range needed for these drugs to be effective. Additionally, they can also be referred to as loop-acting, loop diuretics, or loop water pills. Other examples include furosemide, torsemide, and bumetanide.
