Louvres are slatted panels or windows that allow air and light to pass through while keeping out rain and direct sunlight. Also called "jalousies" or "shutters," these structures originated in 18th-century France and have become a popular feature in modern architectural designs. Other synonyms for louvres include "blinds," "grills," "screens," and "lattice." They are commonly used in exterior building facades, sunrooms, patios, and verandas, where their adjustable slats can be tilted to control the amount of light and air entering the space. Louvred shutters are also used as privacy screens and security features for windows and doors.
