Macrosomia is a medical term used to describe an unusually large baby at birth. However, there are other medical terminologies that mean the same as macrosomia. Some of the synonyms for macrosomia include "large for gestational age" (LGA), "fetal macrosomia," "big baby syndrome," and "overgrowth syndrome." These terms are used interchangeably by health professionals to describe infants born weighing more than 4 kilograms (8 pounds 13 ounces) or whose length at birth is above the 90th percentile for their gestational age. Macrosomia is associated with health risks for both the baby and the mother, including birth injuries, C-sections, gestational diabetes, and other complications during labor and delivery.
