The major mode of a musical piece is one of the two main modes in Western music theory, the other being the minor mode. However, there are several synonyms for the major mode, such as Ionian, the first mode of the diatonic scale, which is characterized by a happy, uplifting sound. Another synonym is the natural major, which is used to distinguish it from the various other types of major scales, such as the harmonic major, which features a raised seventh degree, or the melodic major, which has both raised sixth and seventh degrees when ascending. Other synonyms include the simply major scale or the major diatonic scale.
