The Maltese Lira, also known as the Maltese pound, was the official currency of Malta between 1972 and 2008. After Malta joined the European Union in 2004, it was replaced by the Euro. Other names for the Maltese Lira include the MTL currency code, the Maltese pound, and the Maltese currency. This currency originated in the 19th century when Malta was still under British colonial rule and was equivalent to the pound sterling. Despite its discontinuation, the Maltese Lira remains an important historical and cultural symbol of Malta.
