Mazar-i-Sharif is a city located in northern Afghanistan and it is also known as the "Noble Shrine". There are several synonyms for Mazar-i-Sharif like "Mazar-e-Sharif", "Mazar-i-Sharif-e-Sharif", "Mazar-Sharif", and "Mazar". The name "Mazar-i-Sharif" literally translates to "Tomb of the Exalted" and it is a reference to the blue-tiled shrine of Hazrat Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad. This city is one of the most important commercial and cultural centers of Afghanistan and it is also famous for its rugs, carpets, and embroidery work.
