Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) is a waste management process that involves a number of different stages in order to process waste into a usable form. However, there are a number of synonyms that can be used to describe this process, including waste-to-energy, energy-from-waste (EFW) and refuse-derived fuel (RDF). All of these terms refer to ways in which waste can be processed in order to produce either energy or a fuel source, thereby reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill. Furthermore, the terms demonstrate a focus on sustainability and a move away from more traditional waste disposal methods.
