The median strip, also referred to as a central reservation or a median divider, is a physical barrier used to separate opposing lanes of traffic on a carriageway or divided roadway. In some regions, it is known as a median, traffic island, or central divider. The term median strip is commonly used in North America, while the British often refer to this road feature as a central reservation. Other common synonyms of median-strip include central barrier, median barrier, median concrete, median strip fence, median verge, raised median, and cable median barrier. These structures may be made of concrete, steel, wood, or other materials and may serve different purposes, such as enhancing safety, managing traffic flow, or enhancing the scenic appearance of a roadway.
