Meibomian glands are small oil glands located in the eyelids. They help keep the eye lubricated and prevent dryness. Synonyms for these glands include tarsal glands, palpebral glands and meibomian follicles. Although they are small in size, their function in maintaining the ocular surface health is crucial. Dysfunction of the meibomian glands can lead to Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which is a common cause of dry eye disease. MGD is marked by inadequate or abnormal lipid secretion leading to poor tear film quality, ocular discomfort, and impaired vision. Therefore, maintaining the health of these glands is of utmost importance for healthy eyes.
