Metayers, or sharecroppers, are individuals who rent a plot of land and farm it in exchange for a portion of the crops produced. Other synonyms for metayers include croppers, sharers, tenants, and renters. Sharefarms, crofters, and smallholders are also terms used to describe similar arrangements in which individuals work the land and share in its output. In some areas, the metayers may also be known as agrarian laborers or peasant farmers. Despite the variances in terminology, these individuals play an important role in agricultural production, often working hard to eke out a living from the land.
