Methane gas is a colorless, odorless, and flammable gas that is regarded as a powerful greenhouse gas. It is commonly produced by the decomposition of organic material in the absence of oxygen, such as in wetlands, landfills, and livestock farming. The word "methane gas" is often used interchangeably with other terms such as natural gas or marsh gas. However, there are additional synonyms for methane gas that can be used to describe this gas, including fire damp, swamp gas, and biogas. These various terms illustrate the different contexts in which methane gas may be produced and used, but ultimately they all refer to the same compound with a significant impact on climate change.
