Middle Welsh is a term used to describe the variety of the Welsh language that was spoken between the 12th and 15th centuries. It is a transitional period between Old Welsh and Modern Welsh. The term 'Middle Welsh" is the most common term used to describe this period, however, other synonyms can also be used. These include Medieval Welsh, Early Modern Welsh and Classical Welsh. Each of these synonyms highlights a different aspect of the language in this period, but they all refer to the same period of Welsh linguistic development. Middle Welsh can be seen as a bridge between the ancient and modern Welsh language.
