The phrase "Midwestern United States" refers to the region in the United States that stretches from the Great Plains to the Appalachian Mountains. It is also known as the Midwest, the Heartland or sometimes simply the Central region. Other synonyms for the Midwestern United States include the North Central region, the Rust Belt and the Corn Belt. The term Rust Belt has been used to refer to the economic decline that has been experienced in many of the urban areas of the Midwest. The Corn Belt is used to describe the agricultural dominance of this region, while the Heartland is a term that evokes a sense of the Midwest as the heart of America.
