Montezuma II was a famed Aztec ruler who is known for his role in the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. As such, there are a number of synonyms that can be used to refer to him. Some of the most common synonyms include Moctezuma Xocoyotzin, Montecuhzoma, and Motecuhzoma. In Aztec culture, he was known as Huehuemotecuhzoma or "Old Motecuhzoma" to distinguish him from his predecessor, Motecuhzoma Ilhuicamina.
