Montia Chamissoi, also known as Indian lettuce or redwood lettuce, is a plant native to thickets, hillsides, and wetlands in Western North America. It is a small annual herb, usually not more than 10 cm tall, with slender, succulent, and reddish stems. It bears tiny white or pink flowers and has a mild flavor, making it a popular addition to salads and soups. Some common synonyms for Montia Chamissoi include Claytonia sibirica, Miner's lettuce, and Winter purslane. Claytonia sibirica is a synonym because Montia Chamissoi was initially classified as Claytonia sibirica until it was later reclassified. Miner's lettuce is another synonym as it was named after the miners who discovered it and consumed it for its vitamin C content. Winter purslane is another synonym because of its resemblance to the succulent purslane plant.
