Mutillidae is a family of wasps found in most parts of the world. These wasps are characterized by their bright colors, black body and long legs. They are commonly known as velvet ants due to their thick hair covering their body. Mutillidae is also known as cow killer ant, mule killer ant, red velvet ant, panda ant, and hairy ant. These synonyms are used because of the wasp's physical appearance or because of the potency of their sting. Though their sting is quite painful, the Mutillidae wasps are important pollinators and predators to other insects.
