Neuronal migration disorder (NMD) is a condition in which the neurons fail to move to their proper positions during fetal development. This disorder results in various neurological conditions such as epilepsy, intellectual disability, and cerebral palsy. There are different synonyms for NMD, such as cortical dysplasia, heterotopia, lissencephaly, and gray matter heterotopia. These conditions are caused due to mutations in various genes responsible for neuronal migration. Patients with NMD experience a range of symptoms from mild developmental delays to severe seizure disorders. Early diagnosis and treatment of NMD can improve the symptoms and reduce the chance of complications.
