Nez Perce is a term used to describe a Native American tribe that predominantly inhabits the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. The term "Nez Perce" means "pierced nose" in French, but the tribe actually did not practice nose piercing. For those who wish to avoid using or repeating the term repeatedly, there are a number of synonyms that can be used in place of "Nez Perce." Some of these synonyms include Nimiipuu, which means "the people" in the Nez Perce language, and Sahaptin, which is the name of the larger linguistic group to which the Nez Perce belong. Other synonyms include the Clearwater people, the Nespelem people, and the Selway-Bitterroot people.
