"Niger Franc" is the official currency of the West African country Niger. It has been in use since 1959 when Niger gained independence from France. The currency is abbreviated as XOF and is pegged to the Euro. Besides "Niger Franc," the currency has various synonyms such as West African CFA Franc, African Financial Community Franc, and Franc of the Cooperation Financiere en Afrique Centrale. These synonyms are used interchangeably to refer to the same currency used in the West and Central African regions. Some other currencies used in the West African region include Gambian Dalasi, Ghanaian Cedi, and Nigerian Naira, among others.
