NNRTI or Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors are a class of antiretroviral drugs used for the treatment of HIV-1 infections. Some other terms for NNRTIs include non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, NNRT inhibitors, non-nucleoside analogs of reverse transcriptase, non-nucleoside inhibitors, and noncompetitive inhibitors of reverse transcriptase. NNRTIs work by targeting the reverse transcriptase enzyme of the virus that is responsible for replication, preventing it from copying RNA into DNA. These drugs are commonly used in combination with other antiretroviral medications to achieve a comprehensive HIV treatment plan. NNRTIs have revolutionized the treatment of HIV-1 infections and have been instrumental in prolonging the lifespan of infected individuals.
