Northern Rhodesia was a British protectorate that existed from 1911 until 1964, when it gained independence and became the Republic of Zambia. While this name is still used to refer to the country during this period, it had a few synonyms as well. One of these was Barotziland-North-Western Rhodesia, which referred to the north-western region of the protectorate. Another synonym was Eastern Province-Rhodesia, which referred to the eastern part of the protectorate, bordering Mozambique. Lastly, North-Eastern Rhodesia was used to describe the area bordering Tanzania. While these names are no longer in use, they provide an interesting insight into the history and geography of this once-British colony.
