Optic chiasma, known also as optic chiasm, is located at the base of the brain, specifically in the ventral part of the forebrain. It is where the optic nerves from both eyes partially cross, combining the visual information from both eyes before being transmitted to the appropriate visual centers in the brain. Another synonym for optic chiasma is the optic commissure. Some also refer to it as the optic crossover because it connects the right and left optic nerves. The term optic tract chiasm is sometimes used, highlighting the optic tract connecting the chiasma to the visual cortex. Lastly, optic decussation is used to describe the overlapping of visual information in the optic nerves before being transmitted to the brain.
