Order Heterosomata is a classification of marine fish characterized by their asymmetrically placed eyes. These fish are also known by several other names including the Beryciformes, Berycopsiformes, and Saccopharyngiformes. Although these names may seem different from each other, they all refer to the same group of fish. The Beryciformes are mostly deep-sea fish, while the Berycopsiformes include fish found in both deep and shallow waters. The Saccopharyngiformes, on the other hand, are often called gulper eels and are known for their ability to eat prey much larger than themselves. Despite their diverse habitats and characteristics, these fish are united by their unique eye placement and classification as Order Heterosomata.
