Order Therapsida is a group of synapsids which first appeared in the Late Permian period. They are sometimes referred to as "mammal-like reptiles" because they share some characteristics with both reptiles and mammals. Synonyms for the Order Therapsida include Theromorpha, Theriodontia, and Eutherapsida. The classification of the group has been debated over time, but it is generally agreed that they represent an intermediate stage in the evolution of mammals. Despite their reptilian appearance, they possessed several distinct mammalian traits such as differentiation of teeth and improved jaw muscles.
