Organ-pipe cactus is a common name for the cactus species Stenocereus thurberi, found in the Sonoran Desert region of North America. However, there are several other cacti that resemble the organ-pipe cactus, both in appearance and habitat. These include the cardón cactus (Pachycereus pringlei), the Mexican giant cactus (Carnegiea gigantea), and the desert column cactus (Lophocereus schottii). Some other synonyms for the organ-pipe cactus are pitahaya dulce, ocotillo dulce, sweet pitahaya, and pitaya dulce. These names reflect the sweet, edible flesh found within the cactus stems, a source of food and water for desert animals and humans alike.
