Orthorexia is a relatively new term to describe an eating disorder and obsession with healthy eating. The term "health food addiction" is another way to refer to orthorexia, which involves a preoccupation with consuming only organic, whole, unprocessed, or vegetarian foods. Other synonyms one could use to describe an individual with orthorexia would be "healthy eating extremist" or "food police." Some people simply refer to the disorder as "hyperconscious eating" or "nutritionism." In general, orthorexia can be described as a fixation with consuming only pure, organic foods, to the point where it becomes detrimental to an individual's overall physical and emotional health.
