Palmaceae is a family of flowering plants commonly known as palms. There are many synonyms for this word, including Arecaceae, Palmae, and Palm Family. These synonyms are used interchangeably by botanists and horticulturists, and refer to the same group of plants that have a characteristic growth habit, with a single stem topped by a crown of large, divided leaves. Some commonly recognized members of this family include coconut, date palm, and oil palm. The uses of palm trees vary from landscaping, producing palm oil, to extracting fibers out of the leaves for making ropes, mats and baskets.
