The term Panchen Lama is a designation given to the second highest ranking lama in Tibetan Buddhism, after the Dalai Lama. However, there are several other terms used interchangeably refering to the Panchen Lama. For instance, he is also known as Panchen Rinpoche, which means "Precious One." Another term used is Tashi Lhunpo Rinpoche, which is the title for the head of the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, where the Panchen Lama traditionally resided. Some other synonyms for the Panchen Lama include Choekyi Nyima, Gyaltsen Norbu, and Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu. Despite all of the different names for the Panchen Lama, his importance and reverence as a spiritual leader are universal.
