The Papal States Scudo was a currency in circulation in the Papal States from the 16th to the 19th century. It was also known by other names such as the Roman Scudo, the Papal Scudo, or the Pontifical Scudo. The coin was minted in gold, silver, and copper, with different variations in design over time. In addition to these synonyms, the Papal States Scudo was also referred to as the "shield" due to the imagery on some of the coins featuring the coat of arms of the Papal States. Despite being out of circulation for over a century, the Papal States Scudo remains a significant part of the history of Italy and the Catholic Church.
