A passing tone is a musical note that connects two harmonic notes in a melody. There are many synonyms for a passing tone, such as a neighbor tone, a non-harmonic tone, or an auxiliary note. A neighbor tone is when a note is played adjacent to a harmonic note and then resolves back to that note. A non-harmonic tone means notes that are not part of the underlying chords but are instead added to create tension and release. While an auxiliary note is when a note is inserted in between two harmonious notes and resolves to the second note. Regardless of the synonym used, all of these terms refer to a melodic melody that is momentarily dissonant before resolving to brief tension.
