A patrilineal sib refers to a kin group that is descended from a common male ancestor. Synonyms for this term include patrilinear group, patrilineal kin group, and father's lineage. In many cultures, such groups play a critical role in determining social and political status, inheritance rights, and even marriage partners. Patrilineal sibs may come in a variety of sizes and organizational structures, ranging from small, nuclear families to larger clans or tribes. Interestingly, while patrilineal descent is the most widely recognized form of kinship in the world today, it is not the only one, with matrilineal and bilateral (or "cognatic") systems also found in many societies.
