Peripheral autonomic plexuses are concentrated networks of nerve fibers found throughout the body that regulate involuntary functions like heart rate, digestion, and breathing. Synonyms for this term include autonomic ganglia, sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia, and visceral plexuses. The autonomic nervous system is divided into two main branches, the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems, which work in opposition to regulate essential bodily functions. These branches overlap in the peripheral autonomic plexuses to provide comprehensive control of the body's internal environment.
